Sensuous Stone Sculptures...

In the last six years Joanna Terpstra has taken up sculpture with enthusiasm.

She sculpts sensuous female torsos inspired by sand dunes, birth and dancing. These torsos reflect the way Joanna experiences her environment from within her body.

Joanna carves from hebel block, chiseling away to reveal the form. Then she sands to a smooth finish and applies various sealing surface treatments.

The following preview is a selection of Joanna's recent sculptures which are available for viewing at Joanna Terpstra's Studio Gallery (unless already sold).

When I was about 7 years old, I was stunned by 2 pieces of sculpture in the Philadelphia Art Museum, both were Constantin Brancusi's birds. When I saw Ms Terpstra's sculptures - torsos - once again there was that feeling that someone had distilled motion into a frozen object. Pure motion almost abstract but amazingly full and physical, Brancusi with breasts. It doesn't hurt that they're also very sexy. Definitely worth looking at.
